While the spine has a natural curvature, we still have the tendency to slouch or bend forward. If experiencing back or spinal pain and pressure has come often for you, it is important to be aware of how leaning or sitting at a certain angle can help minimize any further damage.

Here are 5 hacks that can help strengthen and straighten your spine:

  1. Make stretching a part of your routine

Dedicating a few minutes each morning to a basic routine can make a big impact on how your day goes and how your spine feels further down the road too.

  1. Disconnect Often

Putting your smartphone away for a few minutes each day can make a difference. The constant downward motion while looking down can cause a huge excess of weight on the cervical spine.

  1. Take a look at your feet

Wearing loose or improperly fitting shoes can cause havoc on the lower back and spine. Investing in some orthotics may also be a great idea for proper support in shoes.

  1. Be mindful of how you sit

Keeping your back pressed up against the chair and your lower back all the way to the crease is best for spinal health. Making sure your weight is distributed evenly and you’re not leaning or slouching to one side is also something to look out for. It’s important to keep your feet flat on the floor and avoid crossing your legs.

  1. Practice Deep Breathing

When you’re slouching, your diaphragm is constricted. This puts pressure on your chest as you inhale and exhale. But when you’re standing, you’re able to breathe through the diaphragm, lengthening and expanding the spine and allowing the upper and lower back to expand.
