The temporomandibular joint is the dual-functioning joint that attaches your jaw to your skull. This joint moves your jaw up and down and side to side. Unfortunately, since the joint moves in more than one way, TMJ disorders that make it difficult to chew and talk are common. Here are a few common questions about TMJ problems, how oral surgery can help, and what you can do to prevent problems.

Your TMJ Questions Answered

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

Symptoms of TMJ disorders can include jaw pain, difficulty opening your mouth, ear pain, and swelling on the affected side. Some people may also be able to hear clicking or grinding in their jaw joint area or experience muscle spasms, dizziness, and uneven tooth wear. In some cases, the joint may lock open or closed, making it impossible to eat or speak properly.

What causes TMJ disorders?

TMJ problems are commonly caused by trauma or injury to the jaw area, osteoarthritis, or untreated jaw clenching or bruxism. Injuries can change the alignment of the TMJ joint, promoting wear.

Which treatments are available?

oral surgeryFortunately, TMJ is highly treatable. Doctors and dentists first focus on relieving your pain and discomfort, then take steps to restore function to the joint. Muscle relaxants and pain relievers can soothe the pain and release the muscle. Dentists can also prescribe custom mouthguards or splints to prevent further injury.

In severe cases, oral surgery may be recommended to repair the jaw. A procedure called arthrocentesis can clean and irrigate the joint to improve its function. Modified condylotomy can help repair the mandible. Open-joint surgery may be used to repair or replace the joint.

How can you prevent TMJ?

If you are at a higher risk for developing TMJ, prevent problems by taking small bites while eating and maintaining a healthy sleep schedule. Avoid cradling your phone between your neck and shoulder. Maintain good oral care by meeting with your dentist regularly, especially if you suspect you grind or clench your teeth.
