If you’ve never hooked up a trailer to a vehicle before, you might think it’s a relatively simple process. However, it can be more difficult than it seems if you don’t have the right information, and this is especially true if you want to ensure the attachment is as safe and secure as possible. Below, learn the steps to take to safely hook up a trailer to a vehicle.

How to Hook up a Trailer

1. Have a Guide With You

It can be hard to line up your vehicle with the trailer when doing it on your own. In this case, you’ll likely need to get out of the vehicle several times to make sure you’re properly situated. Conversely, having a friend there to guide your vehicle back in the right direction will make short work of the process.

2. Adjust the Trailer Coupler to the Right Height

trailersHave your friend tell you to stop when you’re about ten feet away from the trailer so you can check the coupler height. It should be just a few inches above the trailer hitch, so make adjustments if it’s too high or low. Get back in the vehicle and continue backing up slowly, while your friend watches to make sure the coupler and hitch are lined up correctly.

3. Lower & Latch

When you’re properly lined up, put the vehicle in park and engage the emergency brake. Lower the trailer jack so that the coupler makes contact with the ball of the hitch, and then latch the ball and coupler together. While you can secure them with a safety pin, a coupler lock is stronger and less prone to breakage.

4. Secure Safety Chains

Safety chains keep the trailer and vehicle connected in case the hitch and coupler fail. Many states, including Ohio, have laws in place regarding safety chains and their use. When buying safety chains, make sure they’re rated for the weight of the trailer.
