As temperatures outside get warmer, you might be eager to shut off your home’s heating system and to enjoy the fresh air. But before you turn it off for the spring, you should make sure your heating oil furnace is in excellent shape for next winter. To help you protect your equipment and enjoy efficient climate control all year long, here are five furnace maintenance steps to take in the spring.

How to Get Your Furnace Ready for the Spring

1. Fill Up on Fuel & Shut Off Supply Line

Empty areas inside heating oil tanks can form condensation—especially during warmer months—which may lead to rust damage. You should also shut off the fuel supply valve running to the equipment so that you don’t waste resources or create conditions for a leak.

2. Install New Air Filters

Air filters should be replaced about once every 90 days to effectively remove contaminants—such as dust and other allergens—from your home’s airflow. To keep debris from lingering in your heating system, replace the old furnace filter when you shut off the equipment. You should also replace all ventilation filters to ensure your central air system will provide excellent air quality during the spring and summer.

3. Clean the Equipment

After powering down your furnace, clean all surfaces of the equipment, including the pipes, air ducts, and vents. In addition to promoting healthy air quality all year long, this spring cleaning will prevent dirt, grease, and other debris from building up within mechanical components. Leaving surfaces dirty can lead to damage and inefficiency once you turn on the furnace next winter.

4. Defend Against Carbon Monoxide Leaks

As you clean the equipment, take note of cracked pipes, faulty connection points, and broken parts. These issues can cause incomplete combustion of heating oil, resulting in the production of carbon monoxide—a potentially fatal poisonous gas. Have these parts inspected and repaired by a licensed professional.

5. Switch the Thermostat

Modern thermostats are programmable so that you can maintain better control over your home’s temperature. But if you leave the heating mode switched on, your furnace may continue running during the spring. To prevent energy waste and an overheated home, switch your thermostat from heating mode to the “off” or “cooling mode” position.
