While much of your car’s condition rides on the way you handle auto maintenance needs, your driving habits can also have a direct effect on its internal parts, especially the braking system. To ensure these components last as long as possible, you may need to alter your actions behind the wheel. Use the following do’s and don’ts to prevent the need for brake repair.

Do:

Try coasting.

When you see a stop approaching in the distance, take your foot off the gas and wait a few seconds before pressing on the brake pedal. This will allow your car to lose momentum on its own, so the brake system has less work to do. Naturally, this will allow the brake pads to last longer.

Use one foot only.

brake repairAlthough most driving instructors are strict about this rule, some drivers have adopted the habit of using the right foot for the gas and the left on the brake pedal. Unfortunately, this standby method often puts pressure on and wears down the brake system. Therefore, leave your left foot on the floor and use only your right to work one pedal at a time.

Don’t:

Tailgate other drivers.

Even if you’re in a hurry, resist the urge to tailgate, or closely follow, the driver in front of you. This requires you to brake hard as soon as you see their brake lights illuminate, which will cause the brake system to deteriorate faster.

Exceed the speed limit.

While this rule may be more closely associated with driver safety and traffic laws, it’s just as important for your auto parts. In many cases, speed limits are designed to meet the shape of the road. For example, winding roads have lower speed limits, as drivers can’t see around the bend. If you’re speeding, you’ll have to come to a stop much faster.
