When you first start taking your child to day care, you should be prepared for their reaction. Your child may cry when you leave or need a blanket to keep them comfortable. Here are a few ways to help your child make the transition so that they have a fun and educational experience.

How to Help Your Child Adjust to Day Care

1. Mimic Day Care at Home

Set up activities that they might encounter at the day care, like coloring books and building blocks. Read them books about going to day care and talk about how much fun it will be to play with other kids.

2. Bring a Special Item

If your child has trouble leaving you at the door, have them bring a special item with them to day care. This could be a laminated picture of you, your scarf, their favorite blanket, or any other appropriate item. Check with the day care staff to make sure this is okay by their guidelines.

3. Don’t Look Back

When your child is crying and begging you to stay, it can be hard to say no. Prepare yourself by assuming this will happen. Give your child a big kiss and hug, then leave.

Avoid the temptation to go back and console them if they cry. That will only prolong the situation. Ask the staff to call you if your child is still upset after about 30 minutes.
