Rats and mice are unwanted visitors in your home, and they can cause major problems. These small critters can damage your house and furniture, as well as carry diseases that can harm your family. You should call an exterminator as soon as you notice any of the following signs.

How to Tell If Your House Has a Rodent Problem

1. Noises

Most rats and mice are active at night. You may hear scurrying, squeaking, or chewing from inside the walls or other enclosed, hidden spaces. If you notice these sounds, rodents are probably already nesting inside the home. Have an exterminator treat the infestation promptly to minimize their chances of multiplying and spreading throughout your house.

2. Droppings

exterminatorRodent droppings are small, dark pellets shaped like grains of rice. Mouse droppings can be as small as one-eighth of an inch long, while rat feces are larger at about three-eighths of an inch. If you find their fecal matter, put on gloves and clean it up carefully. Always disinfect the area, as rodent droppings can carry severe diseases, like hantavirus and tularemia.

3. Marks

A rodent’s teeth continue to grow throughout their lives, so they have to chew on hard materials to wear their teeth to a comfortable length. These critters usually chew on wood, including banisters, baseboards, and picture frames. As a result, you’ll notice gnaw marks throughout your home. Rodents will also chew through plastic containers to access food, and you may find bags or boxes with holes in the corners. Additionally, some of these pests like to cling to walls when they travel, so you may notice a dirty, oily stripe along their routes.
