Summer means relying on your air conditioner to keep your home cool and comfortable. You should ensure that your unit is running efficiently so that you aren’t wasting energy or spending extra money on bills. Below are several tips to boost efficiency this season.

How to Improve Your AC’s Efficiency

1. Inspect Filters

Inspect air filters in your air conditioner monthly to keep air flowing uninhibited, as this ensures that your system doesn’t have to work harder to push cold air through. You should clean reusable ones and replace the disposable varieties so that there is no dust or dirt clogging your unit.

2. Clean Parts

Wipe down indoor and outdoor components to remove dust and debris that accumulates during the offseason. For the condenser outside, make sure there is no trash or landscaping debris interfering with its operation. Ensure there are at least two feet of clear space around it.

3. Program the Thermostat

air conditionerSet your thermostat so that you are not running your unit when no one is home. Adjust the temperature about five degrees higher when you are at work or away, and have the air conditioner kick on to your desired settings a few minutes before your arrival.  This minor adjustment can save considerable money every month while also reducing wasted energy usage.

4. Check Vents

Open all vents to see if a steady flow of air is coming through, and vacuum away dust so that it doesn’t blow into your home when running your system. Move any items that may be blocking airflow, including toys, boxes, furniture, drapes, and curtains.

5. Insulate Ducts

If your ducts are leaking air, it will reduce your HVAC’s efficiency. Make sure your ducts have no holes and check that any exposed ductwork has insulation. An air conditioner contractor can check every area and fix gaps that are letting out energy.
