If you wear eyeshadow, you might already know what tones bring out the color of your irises. But are you as well versed in applying that makeup safely? Should you overlook proper eye care when fixing yourself up for the day, issues can arise, as described below.

What Kinds of Problems Can Eye Makeup Cause?

Both eye makeup and the tools you use to apply it have the potential to cause issues. If the product becomes contaminated, for example, it can result in infections like conjunctivitis. And if it contains irritants or allergens, you may develop a painful reaction, including redness, watering, itching, and swelling of the eyes.

Brushes and applicators can also become contaminated over time. And if you’re not careful when applying the makeup, such tools can scratch or otherwise damage your cornea.

How Can I Avoid Eye Problems Caused by Makeup?

Always wash your hands before applying eye makeup, and never use dirty brushes or expired products. Check the packaging whenever you open a new product and make a note of its expiration date.

eye careGenerally speaking, eyeliner lasts for up to four months, mascara lasts for up to six months, and brow pencils last for up to two years. If you happen to develop an eye infection, though, you should toss all your opened products—even if they don’t expire for a while—and replace them with new ones.

Avoid sharing makeup or brushes and seal your products properly so they don't become contaminated while in storage. Finally, wash your brushes periodically with soap and water, and air dry them fully before putting them away.
