Whether you’re looking for a new hobby or want to practice sustainable living, growing vegetables is an excellent pastime. In addition to adding color to your yard, growing your own leafy greens, onions, bell peppers, and potatoes will save you money on groceries and provide you with readily available cooking ingredients. The garden and lawn maintenance tips below will help your vegetable plants thrive.

4 Tips for Growing Vegetables

1. Consider Sunlight

Many vegetable plants need full sun, especially if they bear fruit. Prior to creating beds, select an area of your lawn that receives plenty of sunlight throughout the day. This will help peppers, squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes grow more robustly.

2. Plant in Raised Beds

Create beds of about one by four by eight feet, using cement blocks or cedar wood around the perimeter to hold the soil in place.

3. Balance Soil pH

Most vegetable plants grow best in soil that has a pH of about 6.0 to 7.0, or slightly acidic to neutral. Test your soil’s pH with a kit from a gardening or lawn maintenance center. To raise the pH, add limestone. To lower the pH, add aluminum sulfate or elemental sulfur.

4. Plan & Plant Beds Carefully

Select four to five different types of vegetables that all require the same soil pH, amount of sunlight, and moisture so that they’ll grow well in the same bed. Vegetables need room to spread out, so plant them about 10 to 15 inches away from one another and the edges of the beds.
