If you see well, scheduling an eye exam is probably low on your to-do list—if it’s even on your list at all. Vision correction isn't the only reason to visit an optometrist, though. Because of their vascular nature, the eyes can provide a relatively clear picture of overall health and regular exams allow for the early detection of the following conditions.

3 Common Health Problems Your Eye Doctor Can Detect

1. Diabetes

Untreated diabetes can damage blood vessels in the retina. If left unchecked, a condition called diabetic retinopathy can develop. This condition is characterized by leaking blood vessels, which have the potential to cause blindness. As long as it’s diagnosed in an early stage, though, you can prevent irreversible damage by getting your blood sugar under control.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis

Characterized by chronic inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) doesn't just affect the joints. It also causes dry eye, which increases the risk of infection because tears are responsible for rinsing away bacteria. In rare cases, RA contributes to inflammation of the sclera, as well. The sclera is the white part of the eye. If it’s red or irritated, it may be inflamed because of RA.

3. Hypertension

In many cases, this is the first and only symptom of hypertension until associated complications arise. By scheduling regular eye exams, you can ensure the early detection of cardiovascular issues like high blood pressure, which will allow you to take measures to prevent life-threatening complications.
