A tooth extraction is a dental procedure that removes one or more teeth from the mouth. Though extractions are common and nothing to fear with today’s advanced dentistry techniques, they require proper aftercare to ensure healing and prevent infection. Here’s how to take care of yourself in the days following the appointment.

The First Two Days

During the first two days, a blood clot will form over the tooth extraction, close the wound, and start the healing process. It's important to leave the area as undisturbed as possible during this time. Don't rinse or gargle anything in the mouth, avoid drinking with straws, and be sure not to spit or smoke. If you need to sneeze or blow your nose, try to do so as gently and lightly as possible.

Get plenty of rest, and take pain relievers as recommended by your dentist; if your mouth is sore, apply an ice or cold pack to the face for 10 or 15 minutes. Keep your head slightly elevated, especially when sleeping, so blood doesn't collect in the incision area and inhibit clotting. Finally, replace the provided gauze every few hours.

Day Three Through Two Weeks

By day three, the blood clot should be formed. This allows for more freedom of movement, but care should still be taken to make sure the clot stays in place. You can start rinsing with salt water or saline solutions to reduce bacteria and prevent infection. Brush and floss as you normally would, but take steps to avoid the incision site for at least a couple of weeks.

Throughout your recovery, it may be more comfortable to eat soft foods, which can also minimize aggravation around the clot. Feel free to introduce firmer and firmer foods as time goes on and you feel ready.
