One of the best ways to protect your home from the outside elements is by maintaining your roof.  If you are having a new one installed, practice the following to make the process easier for yourself and your contractor.

Do:

Let your neighbors know in advance.

As a courtesy, tell your neighbors about the upcoming installation. A roof replacement involves the removal of shingles, gutters, and other materials. While professional roofers will take extra care to minimize items winding up in your neighbor’s yard, the work will cause some noise and dust and particulates may travel on the wind. Kindly suggest they cover plants and remove items that may be impacted.

Provide a clear path for easy access.

The night before the roof replacement, park all vehicles away from the driveway. This ensures contractors are able to have waste bins and other equipment nearby. If you have a garage, avoid parking your car there. You may need to run errands and get blocked in.

Don’t:

Let children or pets near the work area.

Removed roofing shingles can fall from a great height. In addition, contractors will be working with sharp and heavy tools that children should not be around.

Take care of your furry family members as well. Pets can become nervous and aggressive when there are unusual noises or strangers around. Enlist a friend or relative to pet-sit or give your animals lots of attention and reassurance if they’ll remain home.

Leave landscaping uncovered.

Take the time to mark gardens, water features, and sprinkler heads to prevent damage and accidental tripping for roofers. Use fluorescent tape so that the areas will be easily recognized from above the ground. Cover flowers and plants with a tarp or netting for additional protection from falling shingles and other materials.
