Gutters are a valuable layer of protection for your home. They direct water away from your house, windows, basement and foundation, preventing damage to your precious investment. But they can’t do their job if they aren’t properly cleaned and maintained. Here are some tips to help you protect your home investment.

Cleaning gutters
First off, in order to properly function, your gutters must be kept clean and free of debris. You should clean them at least twice a year but more often you have a lot of trees on your property. Keep an eye on your gutters over time to judge about how often you need to clean them.

Cleaning gutters can be a tedious and time-consuming job. You can either do it yourself or hire someone. To find a reliable cleaner, ask friends for referrals or read online reviews. If you opt to clean them yourself, here are some tips:
• You can blow out gutters with a leaf blower or scoop out leaves by hand while rinsing them with a water hose to flush remaining debris.
• If using a leaf blower, it’s recommended to wear a face mask and goggles/safety glasses to protect your eyes and avoid breathing any debris.
•  Use a sturdy ladder that’s tall enough. (If your home is higher than one story, it’s best to hire a pro.)
• Wear safety gloves to protect your hands against injury from screws or torn metal.
• Avoid working near power lines.
• Never clean gutters when the roof is wet or icy or it’s windy.
• For roofs with a low pitch, you can stand on the roof and blow out the leaves. (Be sure to wear non-slip shoes and take care not to lean over.
• Use a plumber’s snake to clear any blockage in downspouts and drains. You can also try flushing them with a water hose.
• Keep a bucket handy to collect debris as you clear it or use a drop cloth for easy removal after blowing out leaves.

Monitor, repair, maintain
In addition to regular cleaning of your gutters, you must also keep a check on their condition and efficacy. Take the time to check your gutters periodically and make any necessary repairs.
• Check the spikes that attach the gutters; are they well attached?
• Check for any leaks; use silicone caulking to seal them.
• Clean gutters with a pressure washer (but be careful of the angle and pressure; you don’t want to “blow” them off altogether).

Gutter guard systems
If you’d like to reduce the need for gutter cleaning, you can try installing a gutter guard or screen system. Companies who install these systems will include free clog removal, so that’s a convenient plus.
