A liver biopsy is a simple medical procedure performed by a gastroenterologist. It involves the removal of a small piece of tissue from your liver, which is then examined by a pathologist for signs of disease or other damage. To learn more about this common diagnostic procedure, review the frequently asked questions below.

A Guide to Liver Biopsies

Why are they performed?

A liver biopsy is used to diagnose a liver disease that cannot be identified in blood or imaging tests. It can also determine how severe liver damage is in a patient, as well as help doctors decide the best course of treatment. Doctors also rely on these biopsies to gauge how well a specific treatment is working in a patient with liver disease or damage.

What types of liver biopsies are available?

A percutaneous biopsy is the most common. A doctor inserts a hollow needle into the liver through the abdomen, and then uses ultrasound or computed tomography to find and extract the tissue.

In a transjugular biopsy, a small incision is made in the jugular vein of the neck. Then, a needle is passed through the vein to reach the liver and extract a sample. A laparoscopic biopsy involves an incision and insertion of a tube outfitted with a tiny camera, which guides the doctor in removing the tissue sample.

How do you prepare for a liver biopsy?

liver biopsyYour doctor will give you instructions on how to best prepare for your biopsy. You’ll be advised to take the entire day off from work or school.

You may also be asked to arrange for someone to take you to the appointment, bring you home, and stay with you overnight. Your doctor might have you avoid taking medications and eating or drinking the day of the procedure.

What happens after the biopsy?

Immediately after the biopsy, you’ll be monitored by a nurse in a recovery room. After resting for an amount of time determined by the nurse, you’ll be medically cleared and released to the person you designated to take you home. It will take you about a week to recover fully from the biopsy. Go about your daily routines slowly during this time and avoid lifting anything heavier than 10 to 15 pounds.
