There’s nothing quite like leaving the salon with a fresh color and cut. While your hair stylist might have given you the locks you’ve been dreaming of, it’s now your responsibility to take care of it. There are some common mistakes that people make in their hair care that can lead to fading, drying out, and other damage. Below, learn how to properly maintain your hair.

3 Common Mistakes Your Hair Stylist Wants You to Avoid

1. Using Too Much Heat

You do not need to turn up your styling tools all the way to the top heat setting. That extreme heat is designed for rare professional services that require it. You’ll get the same beautiful results by keeping the heat at mid-range, and you’ll save your hair from some serious damage. Though your tools may go up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, keep it between 350 and 400 degrees. You should also protect your hair by spraying on a heat protectant before using your styling tools. There are many leave in conditioners that offer a heat protectant barrier. Our favorite is Trauma Treatment by Lanza. You add to towel dried hair and comb it through. The heat protection goes up to 500 degrees. To keep the integrity of your hair when curling but also a humidity resistant hold that will last, you can also spray on Kenra Heat Block 22 for protection up to 450 degrees that can also be used as a finishing spray. If you are going to flat iron we recommend the Kenra silkening gloss on dry hair to give a brilliant shine and up to 450 degrees heat protection. This creates a protective barrier that allows you to style without pulling all the moisture out of the strands.

2. Washing Every Day

laveen salonThe scalp secretes natural oils, which moisturize and protect the hair. If you’re shampooing every day, then you’re washing away those oils before they have a chance to do their work. Use a boar bristle brush daily to Help distribute your natural oils also known as Sebum from your oily scalp onto your dry ends. Doing this regularly will help balance your oils and add a natural sheen to your ends. Shampoo every two or three days instead. Use a dry shampoo( Living Proof has an excellent one that doesn’t leave build-up) and refresh your style with a blow dryer on the days in between. You’ll get a lot more volume with this technique, as well.

3. Impatience With Wet Hair

If you have hair that tangles easy you want to make sure you are being careful when shampooing. Focus the shampoo on your scalp and let the excess shampoo run down your ends during rinse. Avoid bunching up your ends like they do on TV commercials. Instead keep them down and try running your fingers through your hair while the conditioner is on. Your hair should remain down and un-bunched the entire shampoo and conditioning process. When you first step out of the shower, be patient with your wet hair. Try not to rough your hair up with the towel. Don’t bunch it up into a towel on top of your head if you are worried about tangling. Instead squueze as much water out by pulling it into a pony tail and blotting with your towel. Combing vigorously from roots to ends can cause breakage since the wet strands are particularly vulnerable. Smooth out any tangles with a leave-in detangler like Trauma Treatment from Lanza.  Gently comb in small sections with a wide-toothed comb, starting at the ends and working your way up. Wait until your hair is almost dry before getting to work with the blow dryer. You want to use it for 20 minutes maximum to avoid heat damage.
