Proper tire pressure distributes your vehicle’s weight evenly, so the tread will wear consistently, and your automobile will remain stable on the roads. It’s crucial that you check your tire pressure once per month so that you can prevent premature tire wear and remain safe while driving. Here’s more about how to check the PSI of your tires.

How to Check Your Tire Pressure in Four Steps

1. Look at the Recommended PSI

Tire pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (psi). You can find the recommended levels for your vehicle’s make and model in your owner’s manual or on the inside of the driver’s side door.

Your front and rear tires may have a different psi since front tires often carry a heavier load. Write down the information, as over- or under-filling could cause tire damages and blowouts.

2. Start With Cold Tires

The recommended psi of your tires is based on when they’re “cold” or at rest. This is because road friction heats up the tires, which temporarily increases pressure and may cause inaccurate readings. Check your tire pressure after your vehicle has been parked for at least three to four hours.

3. Use a Pressure Gauge

tiresUse a pressure gauge, which resembles an ink pen, to check the pressure of each tire. Remove the caps on the valve stems and fit the tip of the gauge onto them. You’ll notice the sound of air escaping, and the gauge will pop out to show you the reading, which you can compare to the recommended psi.

4. Fill or Release Air

If you need to add air, drive to the nearest filling station to use the air compressor. Attach the hose to the valve stem to add air, then use your gauge to make sure you’ve put in enough.

If you need to release air, attach the opposite end of your gauge to let some out before rechecking the levels. Releasing air prevents overfilled tires from blowing out while adding air keeps tires from wearing prematurely.
