Many people do not realize that their emotional state often affects their physical comfort. Stress, for example, can cause neck and back pain. If you have been suffering from chronic pain, then understanding the link to your emotions may be the key to targeting the real cause behind that pain.

The Connection Between Emotions & Pain

How Emotions Affect Pain

Studies have found that stress is very common with people that also have chronic lower back pain. Stress and anxiety trigger the release of cortisol in the central nervous system, which is commonly referred to as the stress hormone.

Tensed muscles in the neck can cause headaches or sore shoulders, while tensed muscles in the back can put stress on your spine.

Your back pain can then add to your stress, which triggers more cortisol. It’s easy to get into the cycle of pain and stress, so effective treatment requires targeting both the stress and the pain.

How to Relieve Stress-Related Pain

Exercise is a natural way to relieve stress and stress-related pain. The activity boosts your endorphins, which make you happy and help you control the cortisol levels in your body. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, even if you’re just taking a walk.

After you have exercised, stretch your muscles. Breathe slowly as you stretch—in through your nose and out through your mouth. A good lower back stretch, for example, requires you to lie on your back. One at a time, bring your knees to your check and hug them close. Switch legs a few times, holding for at least 20 seconds.
