Many people use their laptops every day for entertainment, work, or both. Because your computer works hard, it may experience a few issues throughout its lifetime. Below are a few laptop repairs that professionals complete on laptops so that you know what issues to look for.

A Guide to Common Laptop Repair Needs

1. Bad Battery

Your laptop will likely outlive its lithium-ion rechargeable battery. The battery loses its ability to hold a charge as it gets older. This doesn’t mean you need to buy a new device.

2. Freezing

Sometimes, laptops simply get overwhelmed with what you’re asking them to do. The screen will freeze and you may or may not see the cursor moving across the screen.

Open the task manager to see which program is not responding and close it. If closing the offending program doesn’t fix the issue, restart the computer by holding down the power button until the screen goes black. This will fix the issue if it’s a simple software problem.

If the computer remains frozen or regularly freezes, then there may be a problem with the hardware, such as a component in the hard drive that needs to be replaced.

3. Overheating

Your laptop creates heat while it runs, and the fan is designed to funnel that heat away from the CPU. If the fan is blocked or clogged with debris, the device will overheat and slow down. Clean out the air vent with a soft cloth. If you’re using your computer for a long time, set it on a table rather than on your lap, since your leg may block the exhaust vent.

If the computer continues to overheat, then the fan is not doing its job and may need to be replaced by a professional. There may also be dust buildup on the internal components which you cannot reach; your repair technician can access these parts to safely clean them off.
