Most homeowners rely on their plumbing and sewer systems daily, so it’s important to protect them. This doesn’t just mean looking out for leaks indoors, but also thinking about the outdoor lines. Trees can sometimes cause problems, as their roots may grow into lines in search of water and nutrition. Here are some species to avoid and which to choose instead.

Which Trees Pose Threats to Plumbing & Sewage Lines?

1. Birch

This species’s thin leaves and slim trunk makes it suitable for yards of all sizes. However, the compact look is deceptive, as its roots can be very strong and grow out far in search of water, potentially infiltrating plumbing and sewer lines.

To be safe, choose a tree with a smaller root system. Ilex trees, also known as hollies, have a similar thin profile but shorter roots that are less likely to damage underground lines.

2. Willows

plumbingThe unique sagging look of the weeping willow makes it a popular option for properties. However, to support the weight of those drooping branches, the tree’s root system becomes large and robust, reaching piping up to 50 feet away.

Alternatively, try the crabapple tree. Its bushy branches sometimes droop similarly to those of the willow, and its reddish-pink color gives a unique look many people seek.

3. Sycamore

The iconic sycamore tree is a mainstay throughout the Eastern and Central United States. Since it can grow up to 100 feet tall and has widely dispersed branches, its sometimes planted for privacy. However, its root system is equally wide.

For a different privacy option, go with the common boxwood. This shrub can grow up to eight feet tall, making it ideal for privacy hedges. It maintains its broad foliage year-round in New York’s colder climates and resists rock salt during the winter.
