If you have dry skin, you can modify your skin care routine to help treat it. However, knowing what's causing the issue can bring a longer-lasting solution. Here are a few of the most common reasons for dry, itchy skin.

What Causes Dry Skin?

1. Indoor Heating

Indoor heating, whether from forced air, a wood-burning stove, or a fireplace, causes humidity levels to drop. This zaps the moisture out of your skin, leaving it feeling dry and looking chapped and red. The best way to combat the low humidity levels in your home is to run a humidifier any time your indoor heat is on.

2. Harsh Soaps

skin careMany face soaps, body washes, and even laundry detergents are made to remove oil. As a result, they can pull moisture out of your skin, causing dry, rough patches. To avoid this, stay away from skin care products that are formulated for acne-prone or oily skin. Soaps with moisturizers can be just as effective in combatting viruses. Thoroughly washing the hands and giving the soap time to work is the most critical step.  You should also opt for a moisturizing body wash and consider switching to a mild, fragrance-free laundry detergent.

3. Hot Showers

There's no denying that on an especially cold morning, a long hot shower can feel very relaxing. However, those hot showers can cause your skin to dry out. Avoid using overly-hot water and limit the amount of time you spend in the shower to five minutes. You should also use a moisturizing lotion as soon as you’re finished while your skin is still slightly damp.
