3 Signs It’s Time for a New Deck, Norwood, Ohio

A backyard deck provides the perfect spot for entertaining or enjoying a relaxing afternoon outdoors. However, decks don’t last forever. When you start to notice significant wear and tear from the elements and years of use, it’s time to head to a deck supply store and get the materials needed to set up a new structure that’s safe, attractive, and comfortable.

How to Tell Your Deck Needs Replacing

1. It Feels Wobbly

A single loose board can easily be fixed. However, if the problem is a bit more widespread, it’s a sign that the deck is weakening. As the boards move, the screws holding everything together can shift even more and eventually create structural problems. It’s not always an immediate safety issue, but it should be addressed sooner rather than later before the problem gets worse.

2. Boards Are Rotting

deck supplyRot occurs when the lumber used in your deck is exposed to excessive moisture over time. If you protect your wood deck with stains and sealers, you can ward off this problem for years. However, if you’ve experienced flooding or the deck hasn’t been maintained properly with regular sealing, you might notice that some of the boards feel soft or weak.

3. It Presents Safety Hazards

Safety should always be your top priority, so if you’ve experienced multiple accidents or near misses on your deck, it’s probably time for a new structure. For example, you might notice loose nails or screws sticking out of the wood as boards shift or feel the safety railing becoming unstable. Try to address these problems as soon as you possibly can. Repair or cover dangerous areas and, if possible, avoid using your deck until you can replace it.
