Macular degeneration is an eye disease in which the central part of the retina deteriorates. While no one is entirely certain what causes macular degeneration, it is thought that genetics, the environment, smoking history, and diet may all be contributors. Most people develop the condition as they age. If you suspect you have macular degeneration, it is crucial to see an eye doctor and follow their treatment plan to avoid compromised vision or vision loss.

A Guide to Macular Degeneration Symptoms

1. Blurry Vision

Blurred, wavy, or unclear vision is typically the first and most obvious sign of macular degeneration. The center portion of the retina, called the macula, is the part of the eye that focuses central vision, records images, and sends input to the optic nerve. When the macula breaks down, it cannot focus as clearly on the central field of vision, producing the telltale blurriness or lines.

2. Blind Spots

For most people, especially those with age-related macular degeneration, the spot is not a totally blacked-out area with defined boundaries; instead, it is gray or whitish with blurry or unclearly delineated boundaries. The spot may take on different colors or shapes depending on the light you're exposed to in a given moment.

3. Difficulty Seeing in Low Light Conditions

Clearly making out objects in dimly lit environments can be a challenge for a person with macular degeneration. They may especially notice vision difficulties when trying to read in low light or with just a normal overhead light turned on; a reading light, directed at the page, will often be necessary.

Also common are problems driving at night. You may find it noticeably harder to see vehicles, clothing, and other objects that are darker in color, and the glare from oncoming headlights might produce an intense halo.

If you have any of these symptoms, see an eye doctor as soon as possible. Medical Eye Center has been serving patients in Columbia, MD, since 1972. They offer eye exams, glasses, contact lenses, and treatments for eye conditions like macular degeneration and glaucoma. Call (410) 997-9900 or visit them online to schedule an appointment with an eye doctor.
