A large part of routine auto maintenance is taking good care of the engine to ensure your vehicle runs smoothly. Here are a few ways to ensure your car or truck will be reliable for many years to come.

How to Take Care of Your Engine

1. Get an Auto Tuneup

Older vehicles should be tuned up every 10,000 to 12,000 miles, while newer vehicles don’t need service for at least 60,000 miles. A tuneup involves changing the spark plugs, air filter, PCV valves, and fuel injection components. Your auto maintenance technician will also clean the engine throttle body if necessary.

2. Replace Worn Belts

The heat of your engine can damage its belts, and if they crack, you may break down on the road. While belts should last for many years, ask your mechanic to check them whenever you get a tuneup.

3. Change the Oil

Auto MaintenanceOil becomes contaminated with dirt and grime, which affects how well it lubricates the engine. Additionally, the running engine will heat the oil and cause some of it to evaporate. That’s why oil changes should be done every three months or 3,000 miles.

In the meantime, check the oil routinely. The oil dipstick is on top of the oil tank. Pull the plastic yellow ring to withdraw the dipstick and dry it off, then reinsert and withdraw it a second time. Check where the oil hits the stick—the markings will tell you if you need to add more.

4. Keep an Eye on Coolant Levels

Your vehicle’s coolant system keeps the engine from overheating. Throughout the year, keep an eye on the temperature gauge to check if your coolant system is working.

When you want to check the coolant level, wait until the vehicle has cooled down after using it. Then find the coolant reservoir, which has a minimum line that indicates when you need a refill. Since each vehicle is different, it’s best to ask your auto maintenance technician to fill the coolant for you.
