Your dentist will only recommend a tooth extraction when it’s necessary for your long-term oral health and comfort. If you’re considering having an extraction, then you likely have a lot of questions about what to expect. Learn some of the answers to common questions below to help you feel more prepared.

Tooth Extraction FAQ

Why would my dentist recommend an extraction?

Often, extraction is needed for a tooth too damaged from an injury or severe infection to be repaired. For example, if an infection or injury damages the interior pulp, then the tooth will need to be removed to prevent the risk of infection spreading throughout the body.

It may also be done as part of an orthodontic treatment. Wisdom teeth are often extracted to clear space in a crowded mouth.

What should I share before the procedure?

Tooth extractions are low-risk procedures, but your dentist still needs to know your complete medical history. Let them know of any medications you’re taking. Tell them if you have a condition that increases your risk for developing an infection since the incision can allow bacteria into the bloodstream.

What happens during the procedure?

honolulu dentistYour dentist will numb the area. They may give you a laughing gas or a sedation pill, which will make you more relaxed during the procedure.

If necessary, they will make an incision into the gum covering an impacted tooth. They may rock the tooth back and forth to loosen it and pull it out, but you won’t feel anything.

To finish, they may place stitches, which will dissolve over time, to encourage healing.

What is recovery like?

Give yourself a day or two at home to recover. Keep your head propped up while sleeping, and avoid exercise to keep blood from rushing to the area.

Ice the surgical site on and off for ten minutes at a time.

Don’t rinse, suck through a straw, or spit forcefully to keep the healing blood clot in place.

Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen since they may thin your blood and encourage bleeding.
