If you've scheduled a roll-off dumpster rental for a landscaping or remodeling project, there are rules about how you should use this service. Not everything can go in the dumpster, and you should also be careful about how you arrange the materials you're throwing away. Follow these guidelines to avoid extra charges.

Do:

Toss accepted materials.

You can use your dumpster rental for a wide range of projects. Furniture, most building materials, waste from your yard, and household items are safe to dispose of. You can even throw away appliances and some electronics, as long as you remove hazardous parts—including the batteries—first.

Break down anything bulky.

If you throw away a box or a couch, a lot of what you're getting rid of is empty space. Your dumpster rental will fill up fast this way, and you may have to rent another. Before you throw away these items, break them down and flatten them as much as possible, and stack them purposefully in the dumpster to save space.

Don't:

Toss hazardous materials.

Dumpster RentalNothing acidic, flammable, or toxic should go in your dumpster. This includes paint, paint thinners, varnishes, and household chemicals. It also includes batteries, freon from appliances, and other chemicals. Try not to put broken glass or jagged metal in the container as well. It's likely that workers will be going through your dumpster to sort everything inside, so to avoid unwanted cuts and scratches, keep glass out.

Toss recyclables.

If you have reusable materials like paper, metal, or glass, throwing it in the dumpster is a waste. You might be able to get money for recycling some of these materials, and at worst, you're making the environmentally friendly choice by keeping them separate. For convenience, you can rent a recycling container alongside your dumpster and sort as you go.
