When you’re low on space, a storage unit can house your belongings until you need them again. Just make sure to organize your items in an easy to access way; otherwise, you might have to unnecessarily dig through boxes and move them around to find what you are looking for. Here are a few tips for arranging your possessions so you can get to them at a moment’s notice.

How to Neatly Arrange Your Items in Storage

1. Make an Inventory

Keeping track of what you put in each box will help you quickly find what you’re looking for later on. Number each box and make a coordinating list of everything that is inside. Make a copy of the list so you can tape one to the box and keep one at your home. It’s also wise to take pictures of the items inside and document their condition.

2. Disassemble Furniture

Also, place these items upright and toward the back of the unit. If you can’t dismantle shelves and tables, cover them with cloths to protect against scratches and use them to hold boxes.

3. Place By Usage & Weight

For the most part, heavy belongings should be kept to the floor and toward the back of the unit. Place lighter boxes on top of these items and closer to the door. However, make exceptions for items you need more frequently, such as comforters and blankets. Also, keep seasonal items blocked into sections, so you know which direction to look for decorations or sports items when it’s time to pull them out.
