Whether you’re a new poker player or a seasoned veteran who’s played in your fair share of poker tournaments, brushing up on game rules is never a bad idea. Below, learn more about some of the most common types of poker.

Frequently Played Poker Games

1. Five-Card Draw

In Five-Card Draw, each player receives five cards during the initial deal. From here, players can exchange up to three of their initial cards with new ones to get a combination superior to the other players. A good strategy is to draw three cards when you have a pair, two when you have 3-of-a-kind, and one when you have two pair.

2. High/Low Chicago

Frequently played in conjunction with other types of poker, this game can be for the highest or lowest hand. In High Chicago, the player with the highest spade face-down wins half the pot. In Low Chicago, the player with the lowest spade face-down wins half the pot. The rest of the pot goes to the player with the best overall hand.

3. Texas Hold ‘Em

poker tournamentsThe most popular version of poker in the US, Texas Hold ‘Em starts with each player being dealt two cards to keep to themselves. Five communal cards are laid face-down on the table and turned over in three rounds as players bet a total of four times during the game. The goal is to use your initial two cards and the communal cards to create the best possible five-card hand.

4. Seven Card Stud

This variant of poker starts with each player receiving seven cards. Three are face down, and four are face up and visible to every player. The face-up cards allow you to strategize more freely while trying to make the best five-card hand at the table. Try to only play hands you have a good chance of improving and fold if you don’t get anything good in the first few rounds.

5. Omaha Hold ‘Em

While similar to Texas Hold ‘Em, the Omaha version features two significant differences. First, each player is dealt four cards instead of two at the start. Second, the five communal cards are all turned over at the same time as opposed to gradually throughout the game. Players can only use two of their initially dealt cards when creating their best five-card combination. Study all four cards in your starting hand and think of the various combinations that can be made with the cards laid out.
