Power strips are extremely convenient when you have few electrical outlets but multiple devices to plug in. However, electricians recommend using power strips in moderation and only for devices with low power requirements, such as phone chargers. Power strips can be dangerous if misused, so learning how to use them safely is key. Below are a few helpful do’s and don'ts of using a power strip properly.

Do:

Upgrade to a surge protector.

Many people use the terms power strip and surge protector interchangeably. However, only one of them protects your devices against surges in electricity. A power strip simply gives you extra places to plug in, while a surge protector shuts off the current if it detects problems. It is well worth the few extra dollars to guard your computer, TV, and other sensitive electronics.

Look for UL or ETL Certification.

ElectricianCheck that the device you buy has been certified by Underwriter Laboratories (UL) or Electrical Testing Labs (ETL). These are two of the most respected standards and testing organizations. They test devices to make sure they meet basic safety and manufacturing standards.

Don’t:

Plug a strip into another strip.

It may be tempting to add five or six more sockets to the area by plugging a power strip into another power strip. However, this can result in an electrical overload of the wall outlet. It can also trip a breaker, cause a fire, or necessitate an emergency visit from an electrician.

Use an indoor power strip outdoors.

Most strips are for indoor use only. If you need additional exterior outlets, purchase a model designed for outdoor use. Similarly, never use a power strip in damp or wet conditions. Moisture and electricity are a dangerous combination.

Improper use of a power strip can result in damage to wiring, outlets, and even your breaker box. If you need a proven electrician, contact Stellmach Electric, LLC in Cambridge Springs, PA.
