Utility poles are the mark of modern amenities, providing essential power, internet, and phone service to even the most rural communities. However, many people wonder what the wires on utility poles do. Here is a little more information about utility poles, and how issues with these components could cause big problems.

Utility Pole Components to Be Familiar With

1. Primary Wires

Primary wires on utility poles sit on the horizontal beams of the pile. These wires are run across the top of the poles, and are protected by ceramic insulators, which protect the wooden poles from the strong electrical current.

Since primary wires carry around 12,000 volts, it is essential to work with emergency responders to repair any damage immediately to prevent fire and electrical shock. For instance, if a car crashes into a utility pole and the lines fall, the power to the area should be shut down until the pole can be repaired.

2. Ground Wires

3. Utility Wires

The lowest portion of wires is made up of utility and cable wires, which are less dangerous and do not carry high levels of electricity. These cables are installed feet below primary lines and are designed to help route networks to communities. Utility lines do not have to be attached to the utility pole with a ceramic conductor, since they have their own insulation.
