Many people who purchase a street bike expect their auto insurance policy to cover their motorcycle, as well. However, while similar, car and motorcycle insurance are two different policies. The reasons for this are that, in an accident, a motorcyclist is much more likely to experience serious injury and property damage. Automobile occupants have seat belts, air bags, and “crush zones” designed to protect them. Below are some of the principal differences between auto and motorcycle insurance.

Distinctions Between Motorcycle & Auto Insurance

1. Passengers

Nearly all car insurance policies cover passengers as well as the driver. For instance, if you have medical payments coverage, it covers injuries sustained by the driver and all passengers in the event of a collision. On the other hand, default motorcycle insurance does not mention passengers because—not always, but for the most part—bikers ride alone. Depending on the coverage and carrier, motorcycle insurance covers losses and injuries to the operator, but it does not cover those of passengers.

2. Minimum Requirements

Auto insurance in Kalispell, MTAuto insurance is required by law in Montana, and failure to purchase a policy can result in legal penalties. It is considered a misdemeanor, and can earn you a fine of $250 to $500 or up to 10 days in jail. Car drivers must maintain at least $25,000 to $50,0000 of bodily injury liability and uninsured motorist coverage, and $10,000 property damage liability.

On the other hand, bikers are not obligated to buy insurance. However, if they do purchase insurance, their policy will meet the same guidelines as a car owner’s insurance coverage.

3. Extras

Auto insurance covers damage to the vehicle and injuries to the passengers, but it does not cover collision losses to common aftermarket accessories that are not permanently installed (GPS systems, sound system, etc.). However, motorcycle insurance can cover damage to helmets, leather jackets, chaps, and other common motorcycle safety gear. The reason these are covered is that they are considered necessary safety precautions. Without the rider wearing them, the insurer would likely be at risk for higher medical costs due to more serious injuries.
