From spring to fall, lawn mowers play a vital role in keeping your lawn beautifully manicured. Yet, failing to maintain the equipment properly puts your curb appeal at risk as last-minute repairs can delay your lawn care schedule. Thankfully, these three tips can help you avoid such warm-weather challenges.

3 Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips

1. Schedule a Tuneup

Professional tuneups involve both an inspection and service to help the system run optimally. The process covers many of the top-priority maintenance steps, including a spark plug replacement, air filter change, blade sharpening, and an oil change.

Schedule the service at least once a year at the beginning of the season. Depending on the size of your lawn and the frequency that you mow, maintenance may also be required in the middle of the season.

2. Use a Fuel Stabilizer

lawn mowerA common cause of lawn mower repair is gelled fuel. When fuel sets in the mower's tank for a few weeks or longer, it begins to coagulate. Once you attempt to start it, it pushes the semi-solid material into the system, creating a clog in the fuel line.

As a result, the mower won't operate for more than a few seconds at a time. Reduce the risk of the solution thickening by adding a fuel stabilizer every time you fill it up. Additionally, empty the tank at the end of each season and re-fill it with fresh gas in the spring.

3. Clean the Undercarriage

Grass tends to build up on the underside of the lawn mower, especially if there's any moisture at the time of the mow. Unfortunately, the accumulation can block the discharge chute and, eventually, prevent the blade from moving. For that reason, make cleaning the undercarriage a priority after each mow.
