From daily brushing and flossing to twice-yearly visits to the dentist, dental care can generate a lot of resistance from kids. The solution is to make the routine as fun and engaging as possible. Below are a few dentist-approved tips for energizing the toothbrushing experience and making it an event your kids look forward to.

How to Make Toothbrushing Fun for Kids

1. Make It a Game

There are a few different ways to turn toothbrushing into a game. You could have your child brush the teeth of their favorite doll or stuffed animal before they brush their own. You can also set a timer for two minutes—the brushing time recommended by dentists—and have your child "race" against the clock. Finally, you could provide a countdown, with phrases such as "Tooth 10 is sparkling—only nine more to go!" No matter what game you choose, show your enthusiasm throughout, and your kids will pick up on it and be more excited themselves.

2. Create a Story Around Brushing

dentistKids love stories, so why not create one of your own, in which they're the star? Tell them a story where they're the hero, and only they have the power to fight the pesky "tooth bugs" that cause cavities. Make the story even more memorable by buying a cape they can only wear when they're fighting the tooth bugs.

3. Brush Together

When you brush your teeth together, you're doubling the fun for your child. You can have a contest to see who gets their teeth the cleanest, or have them brush your teeth for some increased silliness and fun. Brushing together is also an opportunity to model good dental care habits. Demonstrate proper technique, always accompany your brushing with flossing, and aim to go slow, with exaggerated movements, so your child can see every step in detail.
