Before embarking on a remodeling project, secure a dumpster rental, as it will be easier and safer to work in a clutter-free zone. However, it’s crucial to use the right sized container. Using one that’s too small can be dangerous, as debris could spill over the edge and land in the road during trash hauling. The guide below outlines different sizes and what items they can each accommodate.

A Guide to Dumpster Sizes

Use a 10-Yard Container for Small Renovation Cleanup

Dumpster rentals are categorized in cubic yards, which refers to the volume of material the container can hold. When working on a minor renovation, a 10-yard dumpster should suffice for cleanup. The interior is large enough to accommodate multiple trash bags, decking materials, and discarded kitchen and bathroom fixtures. Because the refrigerant inside is toxic, refrigerators and freezers are generally not allowed in dumpster rentals.

Rent a 20-Yard Dumpster for Property-Wide Cleanup

dumpster rentalIf you plan to outfit the whole house with new carpeting or hard surfaces, a 20-yard dumpster can hold numerous long planks and rolled-up carpets. In addition to flooring, it can hold years’ worth of junk cluttering the basement, garage, and other storage areas. If roof replacement is on the agenda, old shingles, decking, and fascia boards will fit in the heavy-duty bin.

Old tires might not be accepted at landfills, so leave them out of the container. Because they can leak toxic chemicals, car batteries, paint cans, and cleaning products aren’t accepted either. If you’re getting rid of an old boiler, call the local sanitation department for disposal instructions. Anything containing combustible gases is not allowed in the container for fear it will explode during transit or at the landfill.

Use 30-Yard Dumpsters for Home Additions & Demolition

If you’re adding onto the house or replacing all the windows, a 30-yard dumpster offers ample room to place old siding, framing, glass panels, roofing, and other construction waste. If you plan to demolish the garage or another structure, the rubble can be carted away safely in this type of container, too. Just check to see whether you’ll need more than one dumpster to separate metal, concrete, and other materials for the landfill or recycling center.
