To the untrained eye, it’s not always clear why some antique cars are valued much higher than others. However, most car collectors use a point system to give vehicles a ranking of one through six—one being pristine condition and six needing a lot of work. Depending on the collector or auction, there could be as many as 20 determining factors that must be awarded points, but here are the ones most commonly applied. 

What Determines an Antique Car’s Value?

1. Mileage & Condition

A car’s overall condition will play the largest role in determining its worth. Although car mileage doesn’t matter quite as much as some of the other factors, low mileage does signal that the vehicle hasn’t had to endure a lot of wear and tear as long as it was properly maintained. 

Additionally, you can always expect a vehicle in near-pristine condition to be worth more than one that has several rust spots or minor mechanical problems. Having a documented history of maintenance is often necessary to prove how the car has been cared for over the years.

2. Year, Make, & Model

Usually, the older the vehicle, the more it will be worth. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Some models will almost always fetch a higher price at auction than their predecessors or later makes.

A 1967 Shelby Mustang, for instance, will generally be valued higher than older or newer Ford® Mustangs. Also, certain makes, such as Rolls Royce® and Ferrari®, are considered to be higher-quality vehicles and will earn higher ratings if they meet the other criteria.  

3. Authenticity

Antique car collectors are always after vehicles with the fewest modifications. Vehicles that have been repainted or rebuilt will not rank as high as those that have been left in their original condition. Even swapping out minor components like radio knobs can cause the car to lose some points. 

However, having the car authenticated can make all the difference if the major parts are all still there. This is often done by matching the maintenance and purchase records with the vehicle identification number (VIN), date code, regular production option (RPO) code, or a casting number.
