Advancements in technology have transformed the world in many ways. One of the key concerns that people may not think too much about until they’re confronted with it is what to do with a deceased loved one’s social media accounts. There are several options to keep in mind—and there are no right or wrong choices. You may not even want to think about it until well after the funeral service is over. Here are a few suggestions to consider.

3 Ways to Handle a Loved One’s Social Media Pages

1. Leave It Just as It Is

It’s overwhelming to plan a funeral service and cope with the enormity of loss and grief. Often, people find comfort and solace in looking at their loved one’s social media pages weeks, months, and even years after their passing. For some people, seeing old posts and images can be cathartic. That’s why some may think it best to simply leave the page exactly as it is.

2. Memorialize the Account

Charles Town, WV funeral serviceSome platforms allow family members to memorialize the account after the person’s passing. On Facebook, it will read “Remembering,” followed by the person’s name. While no one can physically alter the account, it’s still possible for friends and family members to post on the page.

That may be an option if you wish for loved ones to communicate after the funeral service and stay in contact. Instagram provides similar permissions to memorialize the account; it prevents anyone from logging into the page, but images will still be visible.

3. Delete the Account

The bereaved may wish to delete the person’s social media accounts if they don’t want to check them or worry about receiving reminder notifications in the future. To do so on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll need to provide a death certificate or some other proof of death to begin the process.

Twitter also provides an option to delete an account, for which you may request information. As with other platforms, they’ll require specific details about the person, along with identification and documentation.
