If you’re looking for an amazing workout, try taking a virtual spin class. This involves riding an exercise bike with help from a remote instructor and other participants. Before starting your first class, set up your bike so that it’s optimized for your height and movements. This helps you get the most out of the workout and minimize soreness and injury—here’s how to do it.

How to Set Up an Exercise Bike for Your Next Workout

1. Adjust Seat Height

To ensure the bike is at the right height for you, stand flat-footed next to it. Adjust the level of the seat so that it meets your hip bone. Do this first so you can comfortably get on the bike to complete the next steps.

2. Find the Right Pedal Height

If your leg is straight, move the pedals up. If it’s bent dramatically, move the pedals down. Also, your knee should be mostly over your foot when it’s at the bottom of the rotation. If it’s in front of your toes, adjust the seat back a bit.

3. Change the Handlebar Distance

From there, lean forward and put your hands on the handlebars as you pedal. Your arms should be slightly bent, and your back should be straight, but you can lean forward a bit. If your arms are locked out straight, move the handlebars back. If you’re bending your elbows to nearly 90 degrees, push them forward.
