Known for its fun atmosphere, homegrown menu, and rustic charm, Grins Restaurant has been a popular fixture in San Marcos, TX, for nearly 50 years. This local restaurant had its auspicious start when it opened on Valentine’s Day in 1975. In the beginning, their menu consisted solely of burgers, nachos, and draft beer. Nowadays, they continue to serve these items, along with many others, to the delight of both locals and tourists.

The Origins of Grins Restaurant

Construction

This local restaurant has always had deep roots in the community. The building itself has been at the location since the 1940s. Originally a boarding house, it was converted to a restaurant in 1972 before it turned into Grins.

Initially, the space could only hold 60 people; however, after multiple expansions, it now holds 250. However, despite these renovations, they don’t shy away from their beginnings. Most of the trees that frame the patio have been there since the 1940s.

Connections

restaurantThe decor also reflects its connection to the people of north Texas. In the entrance, there’s a windmill fan that comes directly from an old ranch located just outside of Dallas. Not only do the parts originate from the area, but a local engineer and attorney built it.

Ownership

While a consistent and delicious menu certainly helps, part of the reason why Grins Restaurant has remained steadfast in identity, charm, and patronage is its owners. It’s currently run by two of the local restaurant’s earliest employees, Paul Sutphen and Johnny Ferrell.

These Texas State alumni were both cooks at Grins Restaurant in the 1970s and have never lost their enthusiasm for the establishment or its food. They have carefully guided it through the decades and made sure to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for anyone who sits at their tables.

Philanthropy

Grins Restaurant also understands that its role in the San Marcos community goes far beyond a tasty meal. Not only will they happily host Texas State events, like raffles or faculty lunches, but they also contribute to local charities, such as the Hays County Food Bank and the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center.
