Driving long distances professionally can be beneficial for your bottom line, but it can also be hard on your body. If sitting still is a major component of your job and you do it all day, your muscles can weaken and contribute to back pain. Here is a little more information about how to prevent discomfort, and what to do if you have already started experiencing symptoms.

Tips to Prevent Driving-Related Back Pain

1. Practice Correct Posture

When you get into your cab, focus on sitting in the most ergonomic position possible. Move your seat forward until your knees can bend at a 90-degree angle. Focus on raising the seat high enough so you can see comfortably out the windshield while keeping your neck in a neutral position. Sit up straight and focus on activating your core muscles, which help to support your back.

2. Exercise During Stops

Whenever you have parked your cab to fuel up or rest, be sure to make exercise an important component of your relaxation routine. Focus on walking, running, or strengthening your core to burn calories and support your spine.

Pelvic tilts can also be helpful for strengthening your back and core. To perform this exercise, lie on your back with your knees bent. Press your feet to the floor, and raise your pelvis upward. Hold this position as long as possible, and repeat in sets of 10 a few times a day.

3. Upgrade Your Seat

To make the ride a little easier and to prevent back pain, consider upgrading to an ergonomic seat cushion for your cab. Ergonomic seat cushions are designed to support your weight more evenly, providing a great deal of cushioning while also encouraging better posture. Many varieties also have features like dual-layer memory foam and breathable fabrics to provide a more comfortable ride.

Since these cushions may be able to help you to drive for longer without experiencing back pain, pre-plan stops to take care of yourself, exercise, and use the restroom.
