Your vehicle’s air conditioner relies on a set of auto parts to work together to deliver cool air to the cabin. One particularly vital component is the compressor, which ensures refrigerant is flowing consistently. If it isn’t working, neither will your AC. Below are four signs of a problem.

How to Know You Have a Problematic Compressor

1. No Cold Air

The most obvious sign of a compressor problem is hot air blowing from your AC vents. Because there is an issue with the compressor, the refrigerant is not pressurizing and pushing through your system. You might notice that the air conditioner is gradually not meeting your cooling needs, and then one day, only hot air blows.

2. Odd Sounds

auto partsIf you hear strange noises when you turn on your AC, the compressor is on the way out. There are internal bearings that run the compressor, and when they wear down, you are hearing them struggling to work. Worn-out bearings tend to squeal, but if they seize altogether, you’ll hear grinding noises.

3. Leaks

Bearings are also necessary for stopping fluid leaks during the refrigerant pressurization process. When bearings are failing, you may notice a leak when you turn on your air conditioner. Fluid may be found both inside and outside of the car when you use the system.

4. Sticking Compressor Clutch

Compressors are equipped with a clutch connected to the engine via pulley so that it can use engine power when necessary. Sometimes this clutch gets stuck or seizes, which means no power from the engine can be used. On the other hand, a stuck clutch in the compressor will stay activated when you don’t need it to be and continues to run unnecessarily.
