There are dozens of varieties of windows on the market, which can make it tricky to know what to look for when it comes time to select some for your home, business, or patio room. How a window opens can impact not only how your windows look, but how easy they are to access and clean. Here are three ways windows can open and why you should keep an open mind when you shop.

Common Window Opening Styles

1. Upward

Double-Hung windows are designed with one fixed sash and one movable sash, allowing the window to open upward over the fixed portion of the pane. Double-hung is one of the most popular varieties because it offers effective ventilation. However, these popular windows can also be difficult to clean since you may have to clean the movable sash and the fixed sash from outside or remove and flip the moving sash.

Double-hung windows are versatile enough to be installed anywhere in your home, including bathrooms, bedrooms, and patio rooms. This makes installing them an easy, economical choice.

2. Side-to-Side

Like double-hung windows, slider windows have one fixed sash and one movable sash. However, these windows are designed to move side-to-side, allowing the movable sash to glide over the front or back of the fixed portion.

Slider windows offer unobstructed views and a beautiful aesthetic, but they can be more challenging to seal than other varieties. Consider installing slider windows in areas like patio rooms and entryways where you would want to let the sunshine pour in.

3. Tilted Open

Awning windows are perfect for spaces that demand security since they don’t usually open wide enough for someone to crawl through. However, they don’t allow as much ventilation as slider or double-hung windows because they don’t open as far.
