Spring is the perfect time for a car tuneup. With vacations, family reunions, and long road trips scheduled for the summer, you’ll want to make sure your vehicle is working well so that none of your plans get interrupted. Use the tips below to get your car in top shape for summer driving.

How to Get Your Car Ready for Summer

1. Test the AC

No one wants to spend hours in the car without air conditioning during the hottest time of the year. For your comfort and safety, check the air conditioning to make sure it’s functioning properly. If you hear strange sounds or notice that the air isn’t as cool as it should be, ask a professional to take a look. You may need additional freon, or your vents might be clogged.

2. Change the Tires

car tuneupIf you live in a cold area with snow and ice, it’s likely you’ve been using winter tires for maximum traction and safety. When the weather warms up, you’ll want to switch to all-season or summer tires. Summer tires are better suited for the high surface temperatures. If you leave winter tires on throughout the year, they’ll get worn down quickly as the temperature rises. Swap out your winter tires as soon as the temperature is regularly above 50 degrees.

3. Check the Brakes

Driving in winter weather means you’re dealing with lots of stop-and-go traffic. If you’ve driven regularly in mountainous areas, your brakes may have probably sustained some wear and tear due to the elevation changes. A mechanic can easily check your brakes during a car tuneup. If your brakes are in poor shape, it’s critical to get them changed for your safety and the safety of others.

4. Change the Fluids

Don’t forget to change your oil, windshield wiper fluid, and coolant as part of your summer car tuneup. There’s no need to disrupt a family vacation with an oil change when you can refill your fluids before the season starts. Choose a streak-free windshield wiper fluid that is strong enough to wipe off grime, and top off your coolant with a new mixture that will last throughout the hot summer months.
