Railings naturally enhance aesthetics and provide a level of safety to stairs, balconies, and elevated walkways. They’re completely customizable when working with a skilled technican, particularly when metal is the material of choice. However, with the many considerations that go into custom metalwork, selecting a design isn’t always easy. Simplify the process by thinking through the following and making sure you’re ready to finalize your design.

4 Considerations for Custom Metalwork Railings

1. Level Surface

Materials need a flat surface for proper application. Otherwise, the hardware won’t maintain a tight grip and may cause the railing to come loose. For example, place a level along each of the stairs to determine if they’re flat. Those that are not will require additional attention from the fabricator to compensate for the angle.

2. ADA Compliance

custom metalworkAccording to the Americans with Disabilities Act, commercial buildings should feature a smooth, continuous railing on either side of their stairwells. This ensures a solid handhold throughout the duration of the climb and reduces the potential for injury.

3. Mounting Options

Outdoor railings usually attach directly to the ground. Indoor railings, on the other hand, can either mount to the wall or onto the stair itself. Since regulations require at least 31.5 inches of walking space for single railings and 27 inches for double railings, measuring the distance is essential. Base materials could take up too much room, which means that a wall mount might be your best option.

4. Handrail Length

You don’t want the railing to stop just before the end of the stairs. Ensure a perfect fit by taking a few measurements. Have someone hold the other end of the tape and angle it along the length of the stairwell to produce an accurate reading.
