Owning a Jacuzzi® can help you unwind. You only need a little upkeep and care to get the most out of this spa-like amenity. You can largely prevent the need for hot tub repair by following the do’s and don’ts below.

Do:

Keep it clean.

If not maintained properly, your hot tub can develop algae and bacteria. Aside from being unpleasant, these growths can also clog the jets or otherwise lead to repair issues.

Be sure to run the filter pump 24 hours a day. Test sanitizer levels before and after use, and add more as necessary. Occasional chlorine shock treatment is essential, and you must remove the filter, clean it, and scrub the tub surface once a week or so.

Invest in a cover.

Hard shell covers are typically the best option, particularly if you’re worried about keeping toddlers, pets, and wildlife from falling in. Soft options can also be used on indoor tubs.

Don't:

Empty the tub.

In addition to cleaning and filtering the tub, it's important to change the water occasionally for proper sanitation. Don’t leave it empty for more than a few days before refilling it with your garden hose and a pre-filtering device.

Water can be hard to drain fully from pipes. If it isn’t continually cycled and filtered, it will stagnate and grow unsanitary biofilm. Leaving the tub dry for too long can also compromise seals and gaskets.

Clean abrasively.

Harsh cleaners can damage the surface of a hot tub. For instance, abrasive powders and steel wool can leave unsightly scratches that require tub repair.

Not only are such scratches uncomfortable against bare skin, but they accumulate algae and make it hard to remove. Instead, apply white vinegar and all-purpose household detergent with a soft cotton or microfiber cloth.
