Eczema refers to a group of skin conditions characterized by itchiness, redness, and inflammation. Pediatricians can attest that while it’s rarely a cause for serious concern, treatment is essential for ensuring relief. If you think your child has a form of eczema, here's what you should know about diagnosing, treating, and managing it.

Childhood Eczema FAQ

What causes eczema?

Researchers believe eczema is a genetic disorder. The gene variation responsible for the condition inhibits the skin from retaining moisture. This, in turn, makes the skin more susceptible to irritants, allergens, and bacteria, all of which can cause itchy, red, and inflamed skin.

Do children grow out of eczema?

While eczema is a chronic condition, it tends to improve with time. For many kids, the worst of the symptoms will dissipate by the time they reach 5 or 6 years old. It may reappear when they hit puberty, though. Additionally, it’s not uncommon for teens and adults who had eczema as children to have sensitive skin.

Where does eczema appear on children?

pediatriciansPediatricians see eczema all over the body. There are, however, a few generalities that apply to most patients. Infants tend to develop symptoms on there face and scalp, for example, whereas toddlers usually have irritation on the creases of their elbows and knees. And in older patients, eczema is especially common on the hands.

How do you treat eczema?

Because eczema is most likely caused by a genetic variation, there is no cure. Pediatricians can effectively manage its symptoms, though. Some of the most effective remedies include topical ointments and anti-inflammatory medications. In severe cases, antibiotic creams can also help, as can oral corticosteroids.
