A dental crown is a cover or cap that your dentist places over your natural tooth. They are used to strengthen a tooth or to help anchor other dental treatments. If you’ve never had one before, it is natural to have questions; some of the common ones are answered in the guide below.

4 FAQ About Dental Crowns

Why do I need one?

Dental crowns can treat a number of conditions. They can protect teeth that have been weakened by cavities. They also strengthen teeth that have been cracked or broken.

If you have several missing teeth that your dentist plans to replace with a dental bridge, they might keep it in its place by putting two dental crowns on the end, which are attached to your natural teeth on either side of the gap.

What types of crowns exist?

Stainless steel crowns are considered a temporary option and are typically used on children’s teeth. These crowns come at a reduced cost and can be placed in just one visit. Other metal crowns are available in gold, palladium, nickel, or chromium. However, most adults and dentists prefer ceramic or porcelain, which are more natural-looking.

How does the procedure work?

dentistYour dentist will prepare your tooth for the crown by removing any decay. They will also remove some of the outer covering of the tooth. Then, an impression of your tooth will be created so that they can make a crown that fits. You will wear a temporary crown for a week or two before the permanent crown is cemented in place.

How should you care for your dental crowns?

Porcelain crowns usually last for two to three decades. To help yours reach their full life span, practice a consistent oral care routine—including brushing twice daily and flossing once a day. Avoid chewing non-food items, like ice, pen caps, or your nails. If you tend to grind your teeth, speak to your dentist about a mouthguard. Additionally, visit the dentist’s office for a deep cleaning and tooth inspection every six months.
