1. Check the Tires

Since tire-pressure monitoring systems didn’t come standard on cars until 2007, this feature may not be available to alert you to low pressure. Prevent this by checking your tire pressure with a gauge about once per month.

Inflate them according to the recommended psi in your owner’s manual or the inside of your driver’s side door. Additionally, make sure your tires have a tread depth of at least 2/32” so that they’ll securely grip the roads.

Check the tread by inserting the thin side of a penny into the grooves. If you can see most or all of Lincoln’s head, your tires need to be replaced. 

2. Change the Fluids

Older vehicles need fluid changes more frequently. They have older parts that corrode more easily when exposed to dirty fluids. Get an oil change every three months or 3,000 miles to prevent the metal components of your engine from seizing. Replace the brake fluid every three to four years to keep the rotors and calipers from rusting. 

3. Use Good Coolant

Older auto engines tend to overheat. After many years of heat and pressure exposure, coolant hoses may become damaged. Inspect them a couple times per year and replace them when you notice cracks. Use high quality coolant and change the fluid every 24,000 miles.
