An in-law suite is a valuable home addition that can support multi-generational living, provide supplemental income from renters, or ensure privacy for house guests. This space usually contains a bedroom, bathroom, and cooking area. Here are a few tips for creating a suite plan for your general contractor to build.

How to Design the Perfect In-Law Suite

1. Check Permitting & Zoning Rules

Your general contractor should be able to help you with this issue. Your municipality and zoning regulations may have limitations on what you can add with an in-law suite.

For example, many areas require that you cannot add a second full kitchen to your house. Instead, your cooking space may need to be a small kitchenette without an oven or full-sized fridge. If you’re adding onto your home rather than converting space, setback laws may also limit how close you can build to your property line.

2. Make It Senior-Friendly

Even if you don’t plan to move a senior into the space, incorporating senior-friendly features makes it more desirable to buyers if you sell the house.

Make room for wheelchairs with hallways at least 36 inches wide and doorways at least 32 inches wide. Install a walk-in, zero-threshold shower and a raised toilet in the bathroom. Avoid stairs to the entrance or within the unit if possible.

3. Plan a Separate Entryway

A separate entrance to the unit is valuable, especially if you plan on moving a parent into the space or having renters there. You don’t want them to have to walk through your living area to get to theirs.

Add a walkway around the side of the house or exterior stairs up to their space. If you’ll be caring for the person, you could also add another door to your own living area for convenient access.
