Whether it’s an heirloom, gift, or personal investment, a piano is a wonderful addition to a home. But if you’re downsizing or renovating, you may not have the space you need. Thankfully, you can always rent out a storage unit to temporarily store it. To ensure it stays in good condition, here are a few steps you need to take.

How to Keep a Piano in a Storage Facility

1. Hire Professional Piano Movers

A piano has a unique shape and weight distribution that makes it cumbersome to move around. Furthermore, it’s heavy; upright models, which are the smallest types, usually weigh about 300 pounds. By hiring movers who specialize in pianos, you can trust they know how to safely and efficiently handle the job to and from the unit.

storage2. Use a Climate-Controlled Unit

Like all musical instruments, piano components are highly susceptible to temperature fluctuations and humidity. If the changes are too extreme, the glue can weaken, the wood can become misshapen, and the strings can rust. Ideally, the temperature should be kept between 65°F and 78°F, while the humidity should be between 45% and 70%.

3. Cover It With Cotton

Finally, even if you have a climate-controlled storage unit, you should still cover your piano with a cloth to protect it from dust. Only use sheets made from cotton or other natural, breathable materials, like linen or canvas.

Although plastic tarps are affordable and easy to find, the weave is too tight; condensation can easily form underneath and cause moisture-related problems.
