Your concrete driveway is meant to withstand the weight of vehicles and the wear and tear of the weather. But that doesn’t mean that it is completely maintenance-free. The following guidelines will help keep your concrete in top condition and extend its lifespan.

Do:

Clean up stains quickly.

Concrete driveways are porous, which means they will absorb liquids. This means oil or grease spills should be cleaned up as soon as possible. Otherwise, the stains will set in place, requiring more intensive chemicals to restore the surface to pristine condition.

Apply concrete sealer regularly.

Applying concrete sealer to your driveway is one of the best ways to protect it from stains and environmental damage. This additional protective layer will reduce wear and tear and keep your driveway looking great. Driveways should typically be resealed every two years.

Don’t:

Leave heavy vehicles parked on the driveway for a long time.

concrete drivewayIt’s okay to temporarily park a heavy truck or RV on your driveway, but you shouldn’t leave it in place for weeks at a time. The additional weight and pressure will strain the concrete over time, leading to cracks and other damage. Park these heavy vehicles on the street or another sturdy surface.

Plant trees too close to the driveway.

While trees can greatly enhance your curb appeal, tree roots can cause cracks and upheaval of the concrete. Make sure you plant new trees farther away from the driveway to prevent such damage. You could also install a root barrier to keep roots away.
